ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. -- Deputies arrested a Sun couple who allegedly took $330,000 from an older man, buying cars, a truck, a tractor and other property, according to the sheriff's office.
Darney and Calvin Thibodaux were arrested Saturday by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office. They were charged with exploitation of the elderly, according to the sheriff's office.
Police say the couple gained power of attorney over the victim who was in the hospital.
"After they secured power of attorney, the couple purchased 2 cars, a truck, a Kubota tractor, 2 utility trailers, a 4-wheeler, boat and motor, a 30-ft. camper trailer, a handgun, and a piece of property with a mobile home on it. In addition, the Thibodaux’s began remodeling the victim’s home with the intent to rent it out along with the newly acquired mobile home," said Sgt. Sean Beavers of the sheriff's office.
And, the couple coerced the victim to "include them in his will and leave all of his remaining possessions to them upon his death," according to Beavers, while the victim was unaware of the numerous transactions.
After learning of the victim's wealth, authorities believe the couple developed a close relationship with the man. The sheriff’s office was able to recover approximately $292,000 in purchased items and cash.
The couple was released after posting bond, according to the sheriff's office.
