SLIDELL, La. – The man who shot himself in the head as police closed in on him following a bank robbery, has been declared clinically dead, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

A spokesperson said that the suspect was being kept alive to harvest his organs.

Deputies said the suspect robbed the Gulf Coast Bank in the 1900 block of Oak Harbor Boulevard in Slidell and then fled into the nearby neighborhood. He shot himself as police closed in. No one else was reported injured in the robbery.

The sheriff said the suspect wore a hoodie and mask when he walked into the bank, showed a gun and demanded money. A spokesman said cash was found in the suspect’s clothes when he was taken to the hospital, and deputies found a mask and gloves in the suspect's car.

The identity of the suspect has not been released.
