Tangipahoa Parish Press Release

RESIDENTS MAY NOT RETURN TO ANY AREAS THAT REMAIN FLOODED UNTIL THE WATERS HAVE RECEDED. HOWEVER, THE PREVIOUS MANDATORY AND VOLUNTARY EVACUATIONS FOR TANGIPAHOA PARISH ARE LIFTED FOR RESIDENTS WHERE THE WATER HAS RECEDED. All residents are advised to use good judgment in returning to their homes in areas where the flood waters have receded.

There is still substantial flooding along the Tangipahoa River and other creeks and streams.  The Tangipahoa River, according to the National Weather Service, has crested at Hwy 190.  The most current reading is 22.87 ft at 12:30 p.m.

The river is projected to recede at a more rapid rate than projected Saturday.  It is now projected to fall below major flood stage of 21 ft. by 1:00 p.m. Monday, moderate flood stage of 18 ft. by 1:00 a.m. Wednesday, and fall below flood stage of 15 ft by 1:00 a.m. Thursday.

At 6 p.m. Sunday, parish shelters at Hammond West Side Elementary Montessori School, Hammond Junior High Magnet School, and Natalbany Elementary School will be closed and consolidated into one new shelter at the Emmanuel Baptist Church at 1503 Pecan Street in Hammond.

Tangipahoa Parish requested along with other parishes for FEMA disaster assistance. Tangipahoa Parish was not authorized based upon the initial FEMA damage estimates, but FEMA officials are scheduled to be in Tangipahoa Parish on Monday to do an "on the ground" damage assessment to determine if Tangipahoa Parish has enough damage to qualify for individual assistance.

In order to assist FEMA's damage assessment, the parish has created a web page for residents to input their estimated damage. http://www.tangiparishohsep.org/damage-information.aspx
