SLIDELL, La. - Gov. Bobby Jindal helped break ground Wednesday on a final resting place for 100,000 veterans and their families on the Northshore.

The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery will be located in Slidell, next door to Camp Villere. It will provide free burial plots for veterans, discounted plots for immediate family members.

It’s the third of its kind in the state and it’s dedicated to honoring those who have served our country.

"This is just one more way to say thank you to those brave men and women who ran toward danger, not away from it so we could live in freedom," Jindal said.

The cemetery is being built with an $8 million federal grant. It’s expected to open next year.
