Advocates for propositions make final push

Posted on November 2, 2009 at 1:13 PM

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Supporters of a proposition to help fund potential Tier One research universities are making their final plea for passage before voters go to the polls Tuesday.

Proposition 4 backers say the proposed constitutional amendment would create a national research university fund out of $500 million in existing state money. They say more top-level universities would be good for the economy and for students.

Texas House Speaker Joe Straus and state Rep. Dan Branch of Dallas led a group at the Capitol on Monday urging voters to support it.

Election Day is Tuesday. There are no people on the statewide ballot, but there are 11 propositions, including one that would limit some eminent domain powers. Others deal with public beach access and efforts to build more veterans hospitals in the state.
