NEW ORLEANS (AP) — After a landslide win, New Orleans Mayor-elect Mitch Landrieu, the son of the city's last white mayor, said Sunday his victory reflected a desire for unity in a city riven by the trauma of Hurricane Katrina and racial conflict.

Drawing support across racial lines, Landrieu, who serves as Louisiana's lieutenant governor, will replace term-limited Mayor Ray Nagin on May 3. He won 66 percent of the vote in an open primary election on Saturday and avoided a runoff.

At a news conference Sunday, Landrieu said the vote "was the beginning of a rebirth." Landrieu said his large margin of victory was "a loud clarion call" by the citizens "that they want to come together and be one city again."

Mitch got huge percentage of the black vote, which is good. But every voter wants his/her vote to count, so let's not count that vote against one race or the other. Today we are all Black...and Gold. The entire city of New Orleans is tired of slanted race biting politics driving our city apart. Let's hope that Mitch uses his vote count as a mandate toward a civilized balance between the races in City Hall. We've had enough of the bad ..now let's truly work together. The Saints have bonded our city...now let's take it to the next level.

I live on the north shore but shop and trade in N.O. regularly, and I wish the new mayor all the success in the world. The only thing I hope he does not do is put business ahead of the safety of the N.O. residents should there ever be another hurricane, money is not everything. Rely on the national weather service instead of local so-called weather persons, and evacuate sooner than his predecessor, money can be made later, lives are not replaceable.
