BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- House Speaker Jim Tucker is running for secretary of state in the October election.
Tucker is a Republican from Algiers who is term-limited from his House seat. He is scheduled to announce his candidacy Monday to the Press Club of Baton Rouge, according to a news release from his campaign media adviser.
By getting into the Oct. 22 primary, Tucker will be taking on two other Republicans: current officeholder Tom Schedler from St. Tammany Parish and state Rep. Walker Hines of New Orleans.
Also previously announced to be running is Democrat Caroline Fayard, who lost her bid in the lieutenant governor's race last year, though Fayard has since filed campaign documents only showing she is seeking a statewide post, but not declaring which one.
