BATON ROUGE, La. -- A proposed property tax increase to beef up police and fire protection in New Orleans zipped through a House committee Thursday at the state capitol.

The increase would amount to an extra $30 a year in taxes on a home costing $200,000 and would bring in an additional $5.9 million in 2015.
If approved by the legislature, voters would still have to approve the rate hike
