NEW ORLEANS -- The Greater New Orleans Republicans group is requesting an apology from a New Orleans state senator for comments she made on the Louisiana Senate floor that the opposition to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is fueled by President Obama's race.

On May 22, in a floor speech on an amendment calling for an expansion of Medicaid, state Sen. Karen Carter Peterson said, "It's not about how many dollars we can receive. It's not about that. You ready? It's about race. I know nobody wants to talk about that. It's about the race of this African-American president."

In an interview last week with WWL-TV, Carter Peterson said she's not stepping down or apologizing for her statements on the Affordable Care Act, or "Obamacare" as it's often called.

"There will be no apology because an apology is not due to the people of Louisiana for what I said," Carter Peterson told WWL-TV. "An apology maybe should come from Gov. (Bobby) Jindal as to why he's not accepting the money that can help so many uninsured citizens (and) working families."

The Greater New Orleans Republicans issued the following statement asking for Carter Peterson to retract her statement and apologize:

Peterson represents the City of New Orleans and several members of our organization as a Senator from Senate District 5. Her remarks are inaccurate, unfair and extremely counterproductive.

Karen Carter Peterson’s slogan is ‘Successfully Offering New Solutions to Old Problems.”

Without a apology from Peterson it would seem that the Senator is one of the ‘old problems’ as playing the race card and name calling are vestiges of the old politics that dominated New Orleans pre Katrina.

The Greater New Orleans Republicans demand an apology and official retraction of her remarks on the record from our State Senator.
