NEW ORLEANS - Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise returned to the metro area Friday to a gathering of well-wishers following his selection Thursday as the Majority Whip in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The post makes Scalise the third-highest-ranked Republican in the House.
Friday night friends and constituents gathered at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
Scalise got the opportunity to become the Whip after House Majority leader Eric Cantor was defeated in a local election. He resigned his post and there was shuffling among the power positions, with Scalise securing a valuable spot.
Scalise said Louisiana will be well-represented with his new-found clout.
"The fact that I got a seat at the leadership table means that our voices are going to be heard even louder when we're pushing for those things that are important to people in southeast Louisiana that I represent."
His new role begins on July 31.
