MANDEVILLE, La. -- The St. Tammany Parish Council has announced that the current chief deputy coroner has declined the position of interim coroner.
The council will have to appoint someone to the position within 20 days of Coroner Peter Galvan's resignation, according to Louisiana law. The Louisiana Secretary of State's Office says Galvan's resignation will go in effect at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
The council is requesting any Louisiana licensed physicians living in St. Tammany Parish interested in serving as interim coroner to send their resume to Council Attorney Terry Hand by Oct. 28.
Candidates must agree that they will not run for re-election in the next coroner's race.
Galvan resigned after he was booked on multiple federal charges this week.
