NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — State Rep. Jim Cobb has been arrested on an assault charge after a woman in a wheelchair said she felt physically threatened by the Spring City Republican on the day of the primary election.

A spokesman for the Rhea County Sherriff's Office said Cobb was booked and released on $3,000 bond on Tuesday. Cobb, who has served in the Legislature for six years, lost the Aug. 2 Republican primary to insurance agent Ron Travis by 103 votes.

A grand jury indictment handed down Monday said Cobb caused Wanda Sue Goins, a Travis supporter, to reasonably fear imminent bodily injury.

Cobb in a phone interview denied that he threatened the woman and called the allegations politically motivated.

Cobb is the third Republican state lawmaker indicted in the past year.
