HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — One thing is likely about the next election for mayor of Hattiesburg: many new voters will be counted.

More than 1,500 people had registered to vote by Friday, with noon Saturday the deadline to register for the special election ordered by Judge William Coleman.

Darryl Blalock, who supports Mayor Johnny DuPree, registered Tuesday. He tells the Hattiesburg American (http://hatne.ws/1dfdHU3 ) that he didn't vote June 4 because he figured the Democrat was a shoo-in for re-election.

DuPree led five candidates with 4,775 votes. Independent Dave Ware, who had 4,738, challenged the results.

Each side accused the other of irregularities.

Micky Weidman — a Ware supporter — brought in her son Brett Weidman's registration. She says her son moved into Hattiesburg years ago but never bothered to register.
