AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Democratic candidates for governor and lieutenant governor are rallying their female base, sounding the themes for the general election in November.

Wendy Davis, who is running for governor, and Leticia Van de Putte, who is running for lieutenant governor, spoke Saturday to a convention of Texas Democratic Women.

Both candidates denounced Republicans for cutting funding for public schools and universities while failing to finance needed highways and health care programs.

Her likely Republican opponent, Greg Abbott, has slammed Davis for proposing increased government spending without identifying where she would find the money.

Davis said women know how to make ends meet with scarce resources.

Van de Putte, currently a state senator, criticized her Republican opponents for their opposition to abortion, even in cases of rape and incest.
