NEW ORLEANS -- Saints quarterback Drew Brees won the ESPY award for breaking Dan Marino's single season passing record Wednesday night.
Brees broke Marino's record by nearly 400 yards, finishing with 5,476 on the season. In 1984, in just his second season, Marino threw for 5,084 yards, a record that would stand for 27 years.
Brees beat out Coach Mike Krzyzewski and his win milestone, Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera's all-time saves record and Lexi Thompson, who at 17 became the youngest woman to win an LPGA tournament.
At the podium Brees thanked his family and teammates, giving shout outs to his offensive line and receivers, among others.
Brees is also up for the best NFL player award, which has yet to have been announced.
