Eddie Bo - "Check Mr. Popeye" - Rounder - 1988
This collection of Eddie Bo's 1960s hits, "Check Mr. Popeye," shows the prolific pianist at the height of his career. The R&B star isn't one of the best known New Orleans musicians, but he made his mark on our city's music scene early in his career and started a hell of a lot of dance parties.
The title track is inspired by the iconic cartoon character of the same name and was one of Bo's biggest hits. "Dinky Doo" is the catchiest track on the album, sounding slightly like a Toussaint-produced Dorsey project, and much like the rest of this compilation, it was written by Bo himself. One song that Bo's voice really stands out on is "Tell It Like It Is," which as a speedy track is about as different as can be from Aaron Neville's version of the song of the same name.
Bo also released two great albums in the 1990s after he returned to New Orleans from retirement that are electric listens, 1995's "New Orleans Solo Piano" and 1996's "Shoot From the Root."
