The 50 must-have New Orleans records
Glen David Andrews - "Walking Through Heaven’s Gate" – Threadhead Records – 2009
On Nov. 18, 2008, Glen David Andrews’ redemption was complete. Surely Mahalia Jackson was either smiling down from high or inside the tiny, packed Treme church in spirit as Andrews and his friends and musicians electrified a crowd at the Zion Hill Baptist Church.
Raw talent, unbridled charisma and with a flick of wit, his passionate performances at Jazz Fest and around town the last few years have become the stuff of legend. A performer only the Treme could create, this live recording captures Andrews’ booming voice and raucous trombone. But instead of the gritty side of second line music Andrews is often known for, here is a full-fledged, soaring New Orleans gospel album.
Andrews, who doesn’t shy away from his troubled past, put together a magnificent band – including appearances by Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, John Boutte and Paul Sanchez – and sings about salvation and plays his favorite church music in a recording that exudes a type of soul rarely found in music today.
Just thank the Lord somebody recorded it.
