Fats Domino – "My Blue Heaven" – Capitol - 1990
There was no question that the Fat Man had to make this list – there can be no list of essential New Orleans recordings without the sweet voice and dynamite piano playing of Fats Domino – it was just a question of how, since Domino’s high period, the 1950s, came when singles ruled the day. And he had the magic touch for putting out big hits, especially when Dave Bartholomew was added to the mix.
And as much as we tried to avoid greatest hits collections, since Domino pre-dates the LP-era, we were forced to find that collection that has those essential Fats songs.
This collection most of the tunes that should be in any Fats collection: “Ain’t That a Shame,” “Blue Monday,” “Blueberry Hill,” “Walking to New Orleans,” “I’m Walkin’,” “I’m Ready,” – all in their rollicking, original versions. These are only half of what’s included this album, and most of the music from the album comes from his time with Imperial when Domino was creating rock n’ roll and making hit record after record.
