NEW ORLEANS - Firefighters battled an early morning blaze in the 6th Ward.
The fire torched an abondoned home near the intersection of North Dorgenois and St. Philip streets.
No injuries were reported.
Around 7:30 a.m., the fire department received several call reporting the fire. According to the New Orleans Fire Department, the two-story building was an abandoned house.
"The first arriving fire company found this two-story wood frame structure with no utilities fully involved with heavy smoke and fire coming from most of the building," said Carlene Barthe, department spokesman, in a statement. "There was also an automobile parked in front of the fire building on fire which was totally destroyed. Firefighters made an attempt on an interior attack, but the building was unstable due to deterioration and extent of the fire."
With the abandoned building ablaze, firefighters worked to protect two adjacent buildings at 2604 and 2606 St. Philip Street. One of the homes sustained some damage, according to Barthe, and the Red Cross is assisting a family.
