19 New Orleans restaurants, chefs and restaurateurs make James Beard semifinalist list

James Beard announced the semifinalists for the 2017 James Beard Awards in culinary excellence. As usual, several New Orleans chefs and restaurants were included.

The sandwich shop from chef Mason Hereford and his partner Lauren Holten, Turkey and the Wolf, 827 Jackson Ave., was named as a semi-finalist for Best New Restaurant.

Arnaud’s French 75 Bar and Cure were both named as semifinalists for Outstanding Bar Program.

Donald Link of Herbsaint was named as a semifinalist for Outstanding Chef and Kelly Fields of Willa Jean was named as a semifinalist for Best Pastry Chef. 

JoAnn Clevenger of Upperline was named as a semifinalist for Best Restaurateur, Brigsten's and Galatoire's were both named as semifinalists for Outstanding Service and Bacchanal and Emeril's were named in the Outstanding Wine Program category. 

Two local sous chefs, Zachary Engel with Shaya and Martha Wiggins with Sylvain, were named as semifinalists for Best Rising Star Chef.

Nina Compton, Compere Lapin

Michael Gulotta, MoPho

Slade Rushing, Brennan's

Michael Stoltzfus and Kristen Essig, Coquette 

Isaac Toups, Toups' Meatery

Rebecca Wilcomb, Herbsaint

In 2016, Shaya took home the award for Best New Restaurant and Justin Deviller of La Petite Grocery won Best Chef South.
