OSLO, Norway (AP) — A Norwegian court has sentenced an Indian couple to prison for abusing their 7-year-old son.

The husband and wife were charged with repeatedly mistreating the child, particularly burning him with a hot spoon and hitting him with a belt, and received 18-month and 15-month sentences, respectively.

The parents denied the charges and claimed the burn mark came from an accident. The couple was held in custody for fear they might flee to India.

Norwegian child welfare authorities took temporary care of the boy, who is now with relatives in India.

The father's lawyer said Tuesday that the verdict would be appealed.

Norway has a zero-tolerance policy for violence toward children. The trial in Oslo has sparked criticism in Indian media.
