KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — A Jamaican policeman has been arrested and charged in the armed robbery of gold bars valued at $537,000.
Detectives with an elite police unit dubbed the Flying Squad alleged Tuesday that Constable Dane Grant and four accomplices conspired to rob a businessman of a stack of gold bars in Jamaica's capital in December.
Police Superintendent Cornwall "Bigga" Ford says the altercation led to a shootout in gritty downtown Kingston that killed one robber and wounded another.
Grant and other suspects have been charged with robbery, conspiracy, illegal possession of a gun and shooting with intent. It was not immediately known if the suspects had lawyers.
Ford praised detectives for making the arrests, saying it is a "very challenging case involving many different leads."
