PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — A spokesman for the Haitian police force says that three foreigners were arrested on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering.
Gary Desrosiers said Monday that two Colombians and one Venezuelan were taken into custody after police officers found $350,880 in cash stashed in their luggage. The arrest happened Saturday at the Port-au-Prince International Airport as the three tried to board a flight aboard to an unspecified location.
Haiti has long been a transit point for cocaine from South America and marijuana from Jamaica for transshipment to the United States, Canada, Europe, and elsewhere in the Caribbean. The U.S. government last year designated Haiti as a "major drug trafficking country" citing an open channel through the Caribbean and Haiti's "still nascent counter-narcotics capacity."
