SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Authorities in the Dominican Republic have seized nearly 2 tons (1.80 metric tons) of cocaine in the largest catch so far this year.
The director of the National Drug Control Agency says the drugs are worth more than $20 million. Rolando Rosado said agents on Wednesday arrested two of four suspected drug traffickers who abandoned the ship carrying the drugs.
He said the two suspects arrested are Colombian. Agents believe the other two suspects are hiding in the popular tourist island of Sanoa, which lies just off the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration recently said that about 6 percent of the cocaine bound for the United States this year is expected to be shipped through the Dominican Republic.
