JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia's army says soldiers from its elite unit have admitted to carrying out a recent deadly attack on a jail on the main island of Java to avenge the murder of a fellow soldier.
A group of gunmen stormed the jail in Yogyakarta on March 23, executing four detainees accused of killing a soldier of the elite unit, known as Kopassus, at a cafe March 19.
The deputy chief of the military's police, Brig. Gen. Unggul Yudhoyono, said Thursday that 11 Kopassus soldiers admitted to taking part in the attack. Police say the soldiers also tortured guards and forced them to open the detainees' jail cell.
Yudhoyono said in addition to killing Chief Sgt. Heru Santoso, the four detainees were also involved in the March 20 stabbing of an ex-soldier.
