KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Officials have raised the death toll to 12 in a suicide bombing at the site of a key national council meeting in Afghanistan's capital.
The Taliban have claimed credit for yesterday's blast outside the huge tent where the Loya Jirga is to be held this week.
In the south, villagers discovered the beheaded bodies of six government contractors and an international service member was killed by a roadside bomb.
Kandahar police spokesman Ahmed Durrani says the men were involved in building police compounds and checkpoints. Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban, is racked by a stubborn insurgency.
Meanwhile, an official in northern Afghanistan says a suicide bomber attacked a convoy carrying a deputy provincial governor, killing a civilian.
