SAO PAULO (AP) — Police say they have found the bodies of three men whose disappearance has aggravated a clash between Amazon tribes and settlers.
A federal police press officer named Maria Pereira Ribeiro says the three were found Monday along a stretch of the Transamazonica Highway that cuts through the Tenharim tribe's reservation.
Police last week arrested five Tenharim men on suspicion of kidnapping and killing the outsiders, apparently in retaliation for the alleged murder of a tribal leader.
Farmers angered by the disappearance of the three attacked a Tenharim settlement and offices of the federal indigenous affairs agency in December.
Ribeiro said Wednesday that relatives had identified the three.
