Monica Hernandez loves the rush of getting your stories on the air.

Originally from San Diego, Monica’s love of journalism has taken her all over the country. And she’s proud to call New Orleans home.

Monica pinched the tail of her first crawfish in Jackson, MS, where she worked at WLBT as an anchor and general assignment reporter for nearly three years before signing on with New Orleans’ Eyewitness News team. While in Jackson, Monica reported on stories ranging from the federal civil rights trial and untimely death of the late Mayor Frank Melton to the devastating tornados that shook Simpson, Yazoo, and Hinds Counties.

Before joining WLBT, Monica worked as a field producer for WNBC in New York as part of a highly selective fellowship with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. There, she had the chance to interview (and challenge) people like Donald Trump and work on stories ranging from families affected by 9/11 to a steam pipe explosion.

Monica also interned for NBC 7/39 in San Diego, and for ABC's World News Tonight in Washington, D.C., where she learned from some of the best in the business.

Monica graduated cum laude from Syracuse University in May 2007 with degrees in Broadcast Journalism and International Relations and a minor in Spanish.

While in college, Monica worked on a one hour public affairs show for the NPR affiliate, WAER radio. She also anchored and reported for the weekly public affairs show "Connect" on Syracuse’s WSPX. She spent a semester in Madrid, Spain, where she studied Spanish journalism, wrote for a Spanish newsletter, and fell in love with the Madrileño attitude of living every day to the fullest.

Monica loves journalism in any form and has written for various magazines and newspapers around the country. She is a proud member of NAHJ and CCNMA.

In her spare time, Monica loves to read, listen to good music, and explore her adopted city of New Orleans!

Monica would love to hear your story ideas! Drop her a line at @MHernandezWWL.
