New Orleans officer arrested

05/16/2008

Associated Press

A seven-year veteran of the city's police department was arrested following a complaint that he beat and took money from a motorist during a traffic stop, the department's police chief says.

The investigation of Officer Rydell Diggs began after members of the department's Public Integrity Bureau received a complaint accusing Diggs of beating and taking money from a motorist during a traffic stop.

During the investigation, a witness to the alleged incident was found and Diggs was arrested on charges of two counts aggravated battery with a dangerous weapon, theft and malfeasance in office, Superintendent Warren Riley said Thursday.

Diggs was placed on administrative reassignment, pending the outcome of the investigation, and suspended without pay, Riley says.
