Lawmakers approved a more than $56,000 increase in the pay package for state Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek. The contract will make Pastorek the highest paid superintendent in the South. A look at the changes:

Pastorek's previous pay package:

_$227,249 base salary.

_$48,000 housing allowance.

_$24,000 car allowance.

_$299,249 total compensation (not including retirement and benefits).

Pastorek's new pay package:

_$271,611 base salary.

_$54,000 housing allowance.

_$30,000 car allowance.

_$355,611 total compensation (not including retirement and benefits).
