Wine of the week: Blending cherries, smoke and spice

10:53 AM CST on Wednesday, January 31, 2007

Sportoletti, Assisi, Rosso 2005, $21.99

Expect to see more wines from Umbria in central Italy, the landlocked province next door to Tuscany. Here, vineyards and olive groves grow side by side. As in Tuscany, sangiovese plays a major role in red wines. Merlot, sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon combine in this wine to provide a riotous blend of cherries and raspberries with wisps of smoke and spice. In the mouth, the wine is smooth and balanced with a long, clean finish. Serve with grilled Italian sausage or roast chicken. Available at Central Market, Farpointe Cellar, Jimmy's Food Store, Pogo's and Wine Market & More.
