TEMPE, Az. - Police are investigating retired NFL player Darren Sharper over accusations he drugged and raped two women in Tempe in November, according to Tempe Police detectives.
Department spokesman Mike Pooley said the 38-year-old Sharper, who was charged Friday with similar charges in Los Angeles County, allegedly assaulted the women in the early morning hours on Nov. 21, 2013 near Sun Devil Stadium.
It’s not clear exactly where the alleged assaults were alleged to have occurred, police said.
Police said Sharper, 38, was visiting a friend in Arizona the day before he is accused of the attacks.
“After going out for the night with her and some of her friends they all returned to the victim’s apartment,” Pooley said. “While at the apartment Sharper allegedly mixed some drinks for the women and served them.”
Pooley said Sharper is accused of sexually assaulting the women after they “passed out”.
“At this time the investigation is still ongoing and our detectives are working closely with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office in this investigation,” Pooley said.
Sharper was was scheduled to be arraigned in Los Angeles on Friday morning on similiar accusations that he drugged and raped two women in October and January, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said. Sharper was arrested Jan. 17 by Los Angeles Police Department detectives.
It’s unclear how the charges in Los Angeles will impact the Tempe investigation.
Sharper played more than a dozen seasons in the NFL, including stops in Green Bay, Minnesota and Louisiana.
Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Stacy Okun-Wiese said Sharper is charged with “two counts of rape by use of drugs, four counts of furnishing a controlled substance and one count of possession of a controlled substance, all felonies.”
The complaints said Sharper used the drugs Zolpidem and Morphine on women he met at a West Hollywood nightclub on Oct. 30.
Authorities said Sharper told the women he had to “stop by his Los Angeles hotel room to pick something up and invited both women (in).”
“While there, he allegedly gave each woman a shot,” a news release said. “Each woman passed out.
One of the women woke up naked hours later and Sharper was sexually assaulting her, the complaint said.
“The second woman allegedly awoke and ‘interrupted his actions,’” the release said. “The two women then left the hotel.”
Authorities said Sharper met two women on Jan. 14 at the same nightclub and also invited them to a party.
The accusations of the events are similar.
“Stopping at his hotel, he allegedly invited both up to his room, offered them a shot, and each passed out,” prosecutors said. “When they woke up hours later on Jan. 15, one woman believed she'd been sexually assaulted. Both women left his hotel and sought medical treatment.”
Prosecutors said if convicted, Sharper faces more than 30 years in prison.
