NEW ORLEANS -- Under a cloud of blue confetti, Hornets fans danced, drank and spent their evening with family and friends outside the Hive ahead of Wednesday’s season opener.
"I'm very excited,” said Whitney Hickerson, a Hornets fan. “I've been a half-season ticket fan for three years."
Just before game time the Hornets and Boston Celtics fans started filing into the New Orleans Arena.
In the crowd were newlyweds Claire and Ben Gough. The Australian couple were attending their first NBA game, and like many Hornets fans, the Goughs are excited to see the team's newest players in action on the basketball court.
"Super excited,” said Claire Gough. “This is our first NBA game. I really like the buzz that's here, the excitement. We really can't wait."
Vernell Lyons and her son Ethan were also eager to cheer on their home team, showing up early for family time in the fan zone.
"This is my first time coming to a Hornets game. I'm very excited. I'm on the bandwagon for the Saints. I guess I'm on a bandwagon for the Hornets now,” Lyons said.
The Hornets franchise says it was a packed house for the season opener, with fans getting a chance to walk away with a special t-shirt.
