New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees acknowledges fans after an NFL football game against the New York Giants in New Orleans, Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009. The Saints beat the Giants 48-27.
Monday night’s game against the Falcons is the most important game the Saints will play over the next four weeks.
After the Saints face Atlanta they then get a three-week buffet of cupcakes (Carolina, St. Louis, Tampa) before they have another Monday night game against New England.
Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves though.
If Green Bay defeats Minnesota Sunday in Farve Bowl II, then a Saints victory Monday gives them a three game lead in the NFC South and a two game lead for the top seed in the conference.
A loss and suddenly everything is wide open.
A loss Monday isn’t a season killer or anything but a win means everyone else is playing for second place.
The Saints have the chance to make December nothing more than a tune-up for the playoffs.
Plus, I really want to get to 10-0. Say it out loud and it’s practically like you are singing a song. A sweet sweet song.
And also having the Falcons be the Saints first loss makes me want to vomit.
Not the Falcons, anyone but the ‘Dirty Birds’ because my hate for them runs so deep.
I’d rather the Saints lose to St. Louis or Carolina then Atlanta. Hell, losing to those garbage teams as a first loss would make all the experts disqualify the Saints from Super Bowl consideration which wouldn’t be all bad.
A loss to Atlanta is more than I can take.
Last Week: 4-1
Season: 21-14
New Orleans (-10) over Atlanta: Reason #543 I want the Saints to beat Atlanta; If the Saints get to 9-0 and are playing 0-9 Tampa the Vegas line will be hysterical.
Vegas is getting killed this year because of all the bad teams. The public bets favorites and when favorites cover Vegas loses. So they’ll just keep raising the lines until the Saints don’t cover. Las Vegas is not in the business of losing money.
So what would the line have to be against a potentially winless Bucs team to make the public wager against the potentially undefeated Saints? Maybe 20 or 25?
I want the Saints to be three touchdown favorite on the road. This needs to happen. Maybe Buddy D can arrange this to happen from heaven. I don’t ask for much.
As for the game, the Saints will show America they are the best team in football and the NFL should be afraid...very afraid.
The season ending injury to Heath Evans hurts and we’ll see how the run defense is without Sedrick Ellis. Still, the Falcons secondary can’t cover average NFL receivers much less the Saints. It’s Monday Night and time for Reggie Bush to make people believe he’s a star and not a draft bust. Bush caps the Saints crushing of Atlanta’s soul.
Saints 45-17
Green Bay (-3) vs. Minnesota: The Packers are the NFC team that scares me the most. Why? Their defense is getting better and Aaron Rogers has been sacked 25 times and still operates at a high level. They still need to beat the Vikings so the Saints can go two games clear in the NFC. Brett Favre media coverage makes me want to chew my own arm off.
Packers 26-20
Indianapolis (-12.5) over San Francisco: The 49ers were my sleeper pick and now they are in a coma. While everyone talks about how the NFL is a passing league now there are still teams who think the forward pass is a fad. I’m talking to you Cleveland. The 49ers are so desperate at QB they went back to Alex Smith.
Colts 34-10
Arizona (-10) over Carolina: At what point will John Fox pull Jake Delhomme and end our nation’s pain? Just kidding John. I personally think you should play Jake until Steve Smith goes insane and tries to punch Delhomme in the face.
Cardinals 27-7
Cowboys (-9.5) over Seattle: Dallas is on a winning streak! ESPN will now spend next week telling you the COWBOYS ARE BACK! Tony Romo is awesome, Wade Phillips a genius, and the Saints have company at the top! How bout dem Cowboys! Did I mention sometimes I hate ESPN?
