NEW ORLEANS — Hours before Monty Williams’ Hornets were set to host Portland to close out the pre-All Star break portion of the schedule, New Orleans’ head coach didn’t want to think about next week and beyond.

“Tonight’s game – that’s my focus,” Williams said. “I’ll worry about that after tonight. I’m not even. I can’t even go there. You’re making me nervous even thinking about that.”

Williams isn’t one to look ahead and with one of the NBA’s youngest teams, he doesn’t feel like now is the time to start.

His Hornets (18-34) are 10 games out of the last playoff spot and only a game-and-a-half in front of the Western Conference’s worst team, Phoenix. New Orleans is 7-8 in the past 15 games but is 3-1 in the past four.

And the last time the Hornets faced Portland (25-27), the Blazers beat New Orleans on a last-second shot on Dec. 16.

Williams, though, isn’t looking at how far the Hornets have or haven’t come since that game.

“I honestly am not trying to be rude but I cannot get myself to go there,” Williams said. “It’s such an important time for us to finish this game out the right way and it starts with having a good shot around, a good film session, getting your rest and getting ready for tonight. We’ll think about all that stuff after tonight.”
