NEW ORLEANS – The Hornets picked up combo guard Austin Rivers at No. 10, giving New Orleans a player some think could blossom into a star in the future.
Rivers (6-foot-4, 200 pounds) is the son of Celtics coach Doc Rivers, one of Monty Williams’ closest friends in the NBA.
At Duke, Rivers became just the seventh freshman to earn all-ACC honors. He ranks in the top five in Duke history for a freshman in points (527), points per game (15.5), free throws (121) and free-throw attempts (184).
He will join top overall pick Anthony Davis in New Orleans and, paired with Eric Gordon, could give the Hornets an explosive backcourt.
