THIBODAUX - Nicholls State University officials announced today that head football coach Jay Thomas will be released from his duties effective November 27. Thomas finished the 2009 season on a winning note as the Colonels defeated in-state rival Southeastern Louisiana Thursday night in Hammond.

Thomas held an overall record of 27-35 as head coach. Thomas led the Colonels to the Southland Conference Championship in 2005. After earning a 21-21 record through his first four years, the Colonels have gone 6-14 over the last two seasons and have not had a winning season in conference play since 2005.

The Colonels only wins in the 2009 campaign came against Duquense (3-7), a winless Northwestern State (0-10) team and Southeastern Louisiana (6-5).

A search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
