METAIRIE, La. ― A few extra notes to empty the notebook:

  • New Orleans’ fifth-round pick Matt Tennant will miss the opening three days of training camp with an excused absence as the center from Boston College tends to family business. GM Mickey Loomis said Tennant’s mother died.
  • DL Jimmy Wilkerson signed with the Saints after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Dec. 27 against New Orleans. Few expected him to ready for training camp, but Loomis said the defensive lineman is ahead of schedule. He passed his physical and is full go for Friday’s opening day of training camp.
  • With FS Darren Sharper out for at least the first week of training camp, Loomis said Usama Young and Malcolm Jenkins will split first-team repetitions at the position. Young is in his fourth year with the Saints while Jenkins is in his second. Both are converted cornerbacks.
  • With Mark Brunell no longer on the Saints roster, Head Coach Sean Payton will have to find a new holder on placekicks. For that position, he said he’ll look at the other backup quarterbacks, Thomas Morstead and Lance Moore. In other special teams news, Payton said Tracy Porter may get some looks as a kick returner during training camp.
