METAIRIE, La. ― Saints Head Coach Sean Payton praised Troy Evans for the way he plays football and for everything he brings to special teams.
And then explained why he cut him. Simply put, Payton wanted to give Evans, the Saints’ special teams captain the past two seasons, a chance to catch on somewhere else.
It was not, however, a move based on the poor play of the kick coverage units.
“The question that was asked earlier was did it have anything to do with how the special teams as a unit were playing, which is not the case at all,” Payton said.
Regardless, the decision to cut the team by four players a week earlier than the NFL mandates boiled down to how much practice time the Saints have these days.
“We’ve gotten to a one-a-day schedule and we’re taking less reps now,” Payton said. “If you’re in training camp and practicing twice, you less have to do that. … When you’re practicing the way we’ve been practicing, that reduction wasn’t going to affect us as much.”
