Anthony Davis will miss only his 11th game this season tonight when he’ll sit to rest an ailing back.

But coach Monty Williams go so far as to say the Pelicans are shutting down their All-Star forward for the remainder of the season – just five games – instead calling it more of a day-to-day injury.

“After talking to the doctors and getting more information, it just wasn’t getting better at the rate that we felt like it should,” Williams said. “So, sometimes, you have to be the brains for them. We’ve done that in the past where we have held guys out even though they want to play.

“He desperately wants to play but we just don’t see the benefit right now.”

Davis began suffering back spasms in early in New Orleans’ 30-point loss at Denver. He played only 10½ minutes in the game.

Still, he played increasingly more minutes in each of the next two games, culminating with a 15-point, five-rebound, four-block night in a loss at Portland.

When asked about Davis' long-term status, Williams said, "We don't know yet. ... He has had back spasms for a week. Taht's a different deal. When a guy wants to play but he's not improving, you put him out on the floor and that could make it worse."
