METAIRIE, La. – In a city married to religion like few others, it might seem odd that a T-shirt that’s becoming more and more common likens a football player to the savior of Christianity.

But in the South, football is a religion.

And in New Orleans, a city that nearly four and a half years ago was at a crossroads following Hurricane Katrina, marrying the leader of the Saints to the Most Saintly isn’t an oddity.

Breesus lives in the Crescent City and in a season unlike any other, he’s helping the city rise from the depths of the nation’s worst natural disaster.

“Just the fact that it’s obviously a sign of affection and people respect you and what you stand for – in that case, it’s an honor (for them) to feel that way about you,” Saints quarterback Drew Brees said.

But he added about his newfound nickname, “It’s definitely a little sacrilegious. I guess that might be going a little bit far.”

Brees, though, is one of the prime players in the transformation of a franchise known for fans putting paper bags on their heads while others made paper airplanes in the upper deck only to throw them off and hopefully onto the field.

In the four years prior to Brees’ arrival in 2006, the Saints were 26-36. In the three and a half years since, New Orleans is 38-23. The Saints are in the playoffs for the second time in four seasons and have secured at least the No. 2 seed in the NFC.

In 2008, he came within 16 yards of tying Dan Marino’s NFL record for passing yards in a season. Right now, he’s the leading vote-getter for the 2010 Pro Bowl.

And for the first time in franchise history, the Saints are 13-0, three wins from a perfect regular season.

Nevertheless, it’s what he does off the field that has endeared him so much to the rabid Saints fanbase.

He lives in the city instead of the outlying suburbs. He’s constantly raising money and donating his time to help rebuild New Orleans’ schools and parks and football fields. And he’s an ambassador to the city in general, such as when he went on the Jay Leno Show a week ago.

“I think he’s earning the respect of this nation,” offensive tackle Jon Stinchcomb said. “He’s not a guy that has always pointed to the name on the back of the jersey. But he has earned the respect not only of this city, but across the league and of fans nationwide.”

Yet, it’s the comparisons to Jesus that have put Brees in a whole different stratosphere, though some find it an uncomfortable one.

“I think Drew is one of the best players in the game today, but he’s no Jesus,” Stinchcomb said. “I understand the support he has. But that might be a step too far for my taste.”

He’s one of the few, then, that feels that way.

Local stores have been selling T-shirts with Brees’ face pictured above the word Breesus. There’s breesustees.com. There’s SainstBreesus.com. Google the term “Breesus” and you’ll find more than 70,000 links.

“I do look at it two ways,” said fullback Heath Evans, who leads a weekly Bible study with players outside the locker room. “A – it’s probably humbling to Drew in the sense of I’m a believer of Jesus Christ so you talk about a picture of a humble sacrificial leader and that’s what drew is. There’s a lot of comparisons.”

Evans went on, “Obviously, no one is Jesus Christ. But at the same time, I think it speaks volumes about what people, not only see and sense, but what they’ve grown to respect in his three and three quarters years here.

“He has helped rebuild a city emotionally and physically, but he’s rebuilt a team with the proper attitude and the proper work ethic and the mentality that you bring to work every day. It’s not about me, it’s about how I better this team.”

I remember the voodoo thing too and that is correct. Not using this term doesn't offend anyone while using it offends many. To Some it is very offensive while others don't understand the problem with it. At the end of the day, somebody, thinking he/she was cute, came up with a way to turn a buck. That's what it's all about. Seems to me that if Brees is your hero and he obviously is, out of respect for your hero, you'd pull the plug on this but you are probably too far in now. The thing that makes the connection more offensive was the shirt on national t.v.. W.W.B.D. Hey Brees is not a party to this. Respect him at least...

We need to be a little careful about our spiritual comments with regard to our Saints. I can remember where invoking the aid of Voodoo priests a few years ago started a Saints downward spiral. Might I recommend that all of us do a better job at distancing ourselves from comparisons of Drew Brees and Jesus? As a Saints fan and a God fan, I definitely keep the two separate! I'm sure that there are at least as many Cowboy fans praying for a win as there are Saints fans. God doesn't take sides unless we do :-)

For those who don't think it's a big deal, etc, I'd ask how they'd feel if someone called their mother/sister/wife dirty, sexual names. Oh, so THAT would be a big deal, but blasphemy is not. Get your priorities straight, people.

reaganadams, you "pray to God that we go 19-0"? Do you honestly think G-d has any respect for someone who thinks he can be used to determine football outcomes? You ought to start praying to G-d that he forgives you for such ignorance.

I wonder if Drew can play golf ( when he's finished with football ).....that sport needs someone to look up to.

I didn't realize this was such an issue. I just took it as him being the transformative leader of the Saints. But I can see where he is coming from. Still, I don't think any of the fans mean any disrespect to the Lord Jesus himself! :)

Shouldn't that be Brews for Breesus? I'd be more for that. L'Chaim.

A bit overblown, I'm afraid. Aren't there many, many THOUSANDS of folks named "Jesus" in most of the latin countries? Admittedly is a tad gauche, though. Although I haven't heard too much complaining when Obama is called "saviour of the world" or "messiah". Besides, as a wise sage once remarked, "of course God has a sense of humour - have you ever seen a platypus?"

The main thing about Drew and the ENTIRE team including the coaches is the total LACK of arrogance publicly which makes this team even more respected both locally and on the national stage. Keep up the GREAT work and thank you for making us all PROUD.

I am glad Drew Brees spoke up and said that he feels this is going a bit too far. That having been siad, he obviously has no control over things that fans put out there. If he feels uncomfortable by this, fans would be wise to let it go. It may be only a little thing to most, but little things can really bug an honorable man with a conscience. I would hate to see him decide a year or two down the road that New Orleans was no longer a comfortable place for him or his family, just b/c someone wanted to make a buck of his notoriety. He has given so much back to this community at all levels, and fans should appreciate that in itself and find another way of expressing their gratitude. After all he may be LORD of the gridiron, but he might fall a little short in comparison to THE KING OF KINGS>

In a related article: Jesus came back to Earth to address the issue of the lack of some New Orleans citizens Sense of Humor. In a press conference held at the Moon Walk, Jesus said, "I may have once, a long time ago, retuned to this planet to save this world. I am not sure what I could have done to help 'the Saints'. Besides I wanted to join the group "Jews for Breesus" to show my support."

This is a very subtle problem with Louisiana sports. Some fans just don't when enough is enough. Football is a GREAT sport. I LOVE to watch it, and it is EXCITING, FUN, FASCINATING, ETC. Drew Brees is a GREAT guy and a GREAT QB. But some people simply go to far, even in jest. Some things are just not funny. Let's keep Drew Brees and the Saints in proper perspective. Almost any joke is appropriate about football, but making Drew Brees a god steps over a line, even if it is innocently done (with no harm intended).

The whole thing sucks and the T shirt is rediculous. If nobody buys em, then whomever threw the idea out, takes a bath.

I honestly don't think Jesus is offended one bit and I don't think anyone meant to be sacriligious. We all have such affection for this man who has done so much for us that maybe we got carried away a little too much but no offense was meant. Drew Brees is no Jesus but he is trying to live his life as Jesus would want him too and we love him for it and for bringing so my joy and hope to our city. I hope we have a perfect season that ends with bringing home the Super Bowl trophy.

I love Drew and everything he's done for this city and it's people. At the same time I agree with him that it is sacrilegious to put the moniker on him. Yes, he is an amazing person and an amazing quarterback but, some people are taking this a little too far.

I am an intense fan and the Saints are wonderful. I couldn't be more excited for them or this season but really, people can go too far in an effort to be associated with a winner.

Oh Breesus, can we just laugh a little and not get so bent out of shape over this. It's all in fun, Brees is only the savior of the Saints football team , not the Savior of the World ...I think everyone knows that.

I LOVE DREW BREES and I am lifetime SAINTS FAN. I LOVE THE SAINTS and pray to God that we go 19-0. ................................................................................... BUT, I get very uneasy when any man is compared to Jesus Christ. I believe these comparisons are sometimes taken to their logical extreme (by some), and they can produce very, very negative results. Again, I love and respect Drew Brees and the Saints, and we all know Drew is an ELITE, GREAT QB. But if I were Drew, I might try to find a gracious way of requesting that the "Breesus" T Shirt thing went away. God bless Drew, but he is a man, not the Savior; he needs the Savior just like everyone else.
