METAIRIE, La – Days after being cut by the Saints, John Carney find himself married to the organization once again.
Only this time, he won’t find himself on the field.
Head Coach Sean Payton announced Thursday that the team had signed Carney on as a kicking consultant.
“In regards to the operation of snap-hold-kick, it’s interesting to listen to his thoughts,” said Payton, who acknowledged that he has learned a lot from the veteran kicker. “I think he’s a great mentor to Garrett (Hartley). I think he’s a guy that has been great for our team. I know he’s excited about it.”
Carney was cut Tuesday as the team tries to set a roster for a playoff run. He was signed by the Saints in August after it was announced the Hartley would miss the first four games of the season sitting out a league-mandated suspension for failing a test for banned substances.
He was 13-for-17 on field goals and 50 of 52 on extra points. He was active for the first 11 games, but was inactive for the past three.
The move to become a consultant means he’s done kicking for the season. Payton said he can’t kick for the Saints or any other team for the remainder of the 2009 season.
