METAIRIE, La. — The Saints have placed Patrick Robinson on the injured reserve after the cornerback suffered a right patella injury in New Orleans’ 16-14 win over Tampa Bay.
Chris Carr was re-signed by the team to fill his roster spot.
Robinson was injured on the second play of the third quarter when he stumbled in a back pedal as he was covering a receiver off the line of scrimmage. He was on the ground in obvious pain when athletic trainers immediately called for a cart to take him off the field.
“It’s disappointing,” coach Sean Payton said. “…Fortunately the type of injury he has is one in which he’ll be able to fully rehab after surgery and recover from at 100 percent.”
Robinson had become the team’s No. 3 cornerback after starting preseason on physically unable to perform list following offseason knee surgery.
Carr spent training camp with New Orleans and was one of the final cuts the team made before the season began. He was in Minnesota continuing to work out when he received the call from the Saints.
“I had a feeling that there may be the possibility of me coming back here,” Carr said. “It’s unfortunate that P Rob had to go down like that. But if I was going to play anywhere this year again it was going to be here. I didn’t want to go anywhere else and have to learn a new system and be around new guys and get comfortable again.
“I knew if I came back here, this is a team I’m already vested in. I care about this team already. I’m thrilled to be back here. I’m glad it worked out.”
