OXFORD, Miss. -- So many unusual things happened in the final 3 minutes of Mississippi's victory Saturday against No. 10 LSU, it got confusing.

Even for the participants.

"I don't know what all happened down there at the end," Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said. "I just know the scoreboard read 25-23 Ole Miss Rebels."

Nutt's confusion was nothing compared to what was happening on the LSU sideline as precious seconds ticked off the clock with less than a minute left and the game on the line.

The Tigers were divided over what plays to call, lost 17 seconds when the team tried for a timeout and didn't get it, and there was admittedly no backup plan when LSU went for the end zone on the last play of the game and came up short at the Ole Miss 6 with 1 second left.

"I can only tell you that the management at the back end of the game was the issue," LSU coach Les Miles said, later adding: "It's my fault that we didn't finish first in that game."

When reporters asked Miles which coach decided to try to spike the ball before the clock restarted rather than going for a field goal, he said he wasn't yet sure and would have to find out. Jordan Jefferson and the Tigers never got lined up anyway and Ole Miss earned its second straight win over the Tigers and the first at home since 1998.

Nutt has beaten LSU four straight times with Ole Miss and Arkansas and has never experienced anything like it.

"You were holding your breath every play," he said.

It was the first time Ole Miss (8-3, 4-3 Southeastern Conference) beat LSU (8-3, 4-3) in consecutive seasons since 1997-99. The win also gives the Rebels the inside track to second place in the SEC West, which could lead to a better bowl spot when invitations are handed out.

Until the final quarter it was a game only a defensive coordinator could love. But things got interesting fast.

First Dexter McCluster, who ran for 148 yards, completed the first pass of his career with a 27-yard scoring strike to a wide-open Shay Hodge, giving Ole Miss a 22-17 lead 29 seconds into the final quarter.

On their next drive, the Rebels appeared to put it away with a 15-play, 8:26 drive that ended with a short field goal to make the lead eight points.

Jefferson answered with a 10-play, 66-yard drive that ended with his second touchdown pass to Rueben Randle, a 25-yarder that left LSU with a 2-point conversion to tie it.

Ole Miss' Cassius Vaughn was called for pass interference on a fade to the left corner of the end zone, putting the ball at the 1. Jefferson made the same pass on LSU's second attempt, but was hurried by Kendrick Lewis. The ball and Vaughn arrived at the same time and Terrance Toliver couldn't make the catch.

But Brandon LaFell recovered the onside kick with 1:16 left at the LSU 42, giving the Tigers one last chance. LaFell gave his team another big boost when two plays later he took Jefferson's pass, broke two tackles and ran 20 yards after the catch to move LSU into field goal range at the Ole Miss 32.

Here's where it got sketchy for LSU. Kentrell Lockett forced Jefferson to throw his first pass away, then the quarterback was sacked by Emmanuel Stephens, a play that pushed the Tigers all the way back to the Ole Miss 41.

"We talked about runs," Miles said. "I felt like the quarterback could manage the situation. That was my mistake."

Miles said he suggested to assistant coaches that they call a run play at that point, but allowed a pass play to be signaled in. Jefferson completed a 7-yard pass to Stevan Ridley with 26 seconds left and Miles said he thought he heard timeout being called.

But the referees never got the message and 17 seconds ticked off the clock before coaches realized what was happening, leaving LSU with fourth and 26 at the Ole Miss 48 with 9 seconds left.

"The clock ran down, timeouts were being called verbally and I didn't relate that to the official apparently and that was the mistake," Miles said.

The team was going for the end zone on the last pass play, he said, and when Jefferson found Toliver in traffic at the 6 with a second left, the team was unprepared. Rather than run the field goal unit on field while there appeared to be confusion with the chain gang, Jordan tried to get the team lined up to spike the ball but never got the play off.

"I know there was a lot of confusion on the sideline," said Jefferson, who rallied the Tigers with 120 yards passing and a touchdown in the fourth quarter. "Nobody knew what to do."

Ole Miss fans rushed the field and celebrated with the Rebels while several LSU players dropped their helmets to the field in dismay.

Despite all the confusion, Vaughn said he knew exactly what was going on as the Tigers foundered making a final decision.

"You have to have a plan," Vaughn said. "I'm looking at the ref waiting for him to call the play. As soon as I hear the whistle and the clock went to zero, I threw my helmet and ran off. It felt good to beat LSU."

The LSU coaching staff has to look in the mirror for this defeat. From the Ole Miss 31, go forward and kick a field goal less than 45 yard to win. With the clock running after 3rd down, down wait 17 seconds to call time out. With the ball inside the 10 and only 1 second, tell the quarterback to throw for the end zone. Three big mistakes that led to a loss.

Coach Les Miles needs to blame himself for the defeat against themselves he is the one that needs to look in the mirror what in the world was he thinking of this is one game that will not be let down for a while that is for sure

LSU has won 7 of their last 15 SEC games. Does this justify the $5 million per year salary for Miles? For those that say Miles is an idiot I think he is smarter than most. ZERO real accountability and guaranteed $5 million per year. I wish I were smart enough to have that deal.

What the hell was Miles thinking. Get rid of him.

saintzfan said on November 21, 2009 at 8:30 PM

I have said all along that Les Miles is way above his league, he needs to resign. He will begin to lose recruits starting this recruiting season, and LSU will begin to fall further and further behind Alabama, Florida and now most likely Ole Miss. Befor LSU's Athletic director will fire him, he will run the program into the ground over the next three years. What was he thinking??? Was he just watching the game like us fans, or maybe, he or his coaching staff should have had the kicking team ready to run on the field, no wait, let me ground it with one second on the clock. Les Miles, you take the cake, and you are getting paid to do this??? You act like you are running a high school team. When you do interviews, I thought you sounded like you didn't know what you were talking about, now I know you don't, you really don't know what you are doing. Please resign so LSU can move on. You got your championship with Nick Saban's recruits and some of his staff!!!

This team did not progress at all during the season. How can a SEC super team have no quarterback play for two years. After today even the most loyal LSU fans must realize that the current coaching staff is not up to the task. I just can't understand how this team can't run, pass or create a gameplan. Week after week LSU was out-coached, if it wasn't for the talent level currently on this team, we may have had a 2-10 season. I have never seen a team so poorly coached as this bunch.

hammerthibodaux said on November 21, 2009 at 9:49 PM

Les Miles and his coaching staff are an insult to the intelligence of the rest of the coaches and staff in the SEC. This was the worse display of clock/game management I have ever seen. There's no one to blame but the coaching staff on this loss. Miles your an idiot beyond idiots.

There are three types of people in this world 1- those that make things happen, 2- those that watch things happen and 3- those that wonder what happened. Which one best describes les Mile? ................DUH!!!!!!

This game would have been over in the first quarter had the refs not called back two, i say again, 2 touchdowns in under 3 to 4 minutes. The Tigers played hard but both teams have been inconsistent all season but Houston Nutt has seemed to have the Tigers' and Les Miles number for the past year.

youknowimright said on November 21, 2009 at 11:02 PM

spiking the ball at the end was Jeffersons fault, not Miles. JJ even said that he was told to spike it if there were 2 or more seconds left. He simply didn't make the right decision on the last play. they obviously should have ran a play. What is Miles' fault, however, are the 2 facts that the field goal team should have ran out and kicked during the 28 seconds that were given to us between the completion of the hail mary and the setting of the ball, and that he let the clock run down so much before calling his last time out. In the end, Jordan Jefferson was put into a position that he had never been prepared to be in and he made a bad decision, but the loss is on less miles for poor clock management and just plain sloppiness. Maybe it is time for a new coach.

Les Miles SHOULD BE FIRED IMMEDIATELY!!! SAINTZFAN said it all: Recruits are going to leave LSU and he has run the program into the ground, as it was before Saban got there!!! Just listen to him on his TV Show, he is an IDIOT, who seems to be watching a DIFFERENT GAME then we are. Some people give Miles too much credit, HE COULD NOT COACH A HIGH SCHOOL TEAM!!! If Miles is back next year, you can forget about LSU Being a Contender!! THANKS LES!!!

Recall that LSU was the first team ever to lose 5 games after winning a national championship the previous year. Last year the defense crumbled. Pelini was gone. Now this year Les can't get the offense rolling. With all the talent we have, it is a shame. I had my doubts after last year, and I jumped off the Les Bandwagon after the Florida loss. He is a good person, decent and builds character, but he needs to surround himself with good coaches. He will never be a Saban or a Meyer.

HEADLINE SHOULD READ LSU RUNS OUT CLOCK! DUM BOYS DON’T GOT NO GOOG LEARNING

truthbeknown said on November 22, 2009 at 6:33 AM

Les Miles is a coward! He embarrased LSU just to attempt to get out of his contract so that he could move on to Michigan. First of all, he is a coach by delagation. He is unable to make crucial decisions on his own. His coordinators are his decision makers and therfore this team would be no different without his presence. That being said, Crowton and his assistants need to follow Miles to Michigan! LSU needs to pursue either Boise St. or TCU's head coach and turn this program around. The peices are in place as far as the players are concerned. PLEASE LSU!, DUMP MILES AS FAST AS YOU CAN!

Les Miles makes $4 Mil a year and has been outcoached by three teams this year. Mississippi State, La. Tech and now Ole Miss. I have been a supporter but I am not as of last night. LSU recruiting took a HUGE blow last night! Les and Gary C. are to blame! They stole a victory from our team! Those kids deserved better and were kicked in the stomach by their own "Leader"! No more "Mad Hatter" from now on he needs to wear a "Dunce" cap, any other coach in college or High School could have finished that one with a victory! I think the tiime has come to be honest about it, we are not getting "More with Les" rather we may need "Less of Les" and start the hunt for another coach for le$$ and more intelligence!

My Goodness. There are a lot of couch coaches with Great hindsight. There was a whole lot going on during those last few minutes but I do agree that these coaches at this level MUST be able to handle situations like this with a hell of lot more efficiency than they displayed yesterday. The way they handled the opportunity to absolutely win that game was truley disgraceful. How many mistakes can you make in just a few minutes? Amazing. The communication structure is obviously broken and has been most of the year....That needs to be fixed pronto if Les if ever going to continue to be successful.
