Do you agree with the move to fire Scott?
NEW ORLEANS -- Old assistant coach. Recent and still general manager. New head coach, old head coach. Recently unemployed. New assistant coach under old assistant coach, now new head coach.
That's the curious circumstances under which Jeff Bower and Tim Floyd now find each other re-united.
For some it will appear that Tim Floyd comes back as the next Hornets head coach-in-waiting. I don't think so. I haven't spoken to Tim, but it seems to me he fills a role born out of convenience, necessity and timing.
Convenient because the former USC head coach has recently moved back to the Northshore. Necessity because Bower -- who has never been a coach at any time in his career except for the one season under Floyd as his assistant -- needs someone to fulfill the head coaching role at practice and during games.
Timing, because most other coaching candidates already have jobs on the sidelines or in the media. Floyd -- except for a recent flirtation as a casino bouncer -- was available. He's someone Bower knows and trusts. Someone he can bounce perceptions and conclusions about his team off, just as Floyd bounced his perceptions and conclusions abut his 2003-2004 Hornet team off when he was their head coach.
This situation gives Bower a chance to observe these guys firsthand in most every situation on and off the court. He can make the same sort of judgements from knowledge as he did in 2003-2004, allowing him to rid himself of players who didn't fit the program when he became director of player personnel in 2004-2005 and then general manager.
The opportunity will allow Floyd the chance to refurbish his coaching credentials in the wake of his muddy departure from USC. My guess is that after this season only one of them will ever coach again, and for neither it will be the Hornets.
