NEW ORLEANS — The Hornets signed center Lou Amundson for the remainder of the season, beefing up the team’s frontcourt with forward Jason Smith out for the year after shoulder surgery.

Amundson (6-foot-9) has played in 21 games this season with Minnesota and Chicago, averaging 1.5 points and 2.3 rebounds in 7.8 minutes per game. He has played with Utah and Philadelphia before playing in 288 games with Phoenix, Golden State and Indiana in six seasons.

In seven years, he has career averages of 3.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

To make room, the Hornets released Henry Sims, who was signed on a 10-day contract.
