METAIRIE, La. — Drew Brees wants you to know one thing about the tip-troversy that took over the internet earlier this week.

It was a carryout meal, not dine in. As opposed to the way it was spun when news first broke, he didn’t stiff anyone on the wait staff at the restaurant.

“You immediately jump to the conclusion that he stiffed a waiter or waitress,” Brees said after practice Thursday. “That’s the part that bothers me.”

It all started when Brees stopped at the Del Mar Rendezvous on July 9, where he’s a regular, to pick up his takeout. He said he posed for pictures with staff while there.

And then a photo of the receipt, which showed a $3 tip on a $74.41 bill, was leaked and found its way onto the website The Dirty, where it was headlined that Brees was cheap.

The next thing Brees knows is he was at the center of a controversy that made him appear cheap.

The Saints quarterback said the headline could have been about he left a tip on a takeout order, "but nobody's going to read that."

Eventually culled into responding, Brees tweeted about it late Wednesday night.

By Thursday morning, Hoda Kotb and the folks at The Today Show were talking about it.

But Brees has been around long enough to understand one thing about this controversy – he hopes it’s the biggest one he has to respond to all season.
