NEW ORLEANS — Linebacker Will Herring is set agree to a one-year contract with the Saints, a source said, bringing back the veteran after he originally declined to take a pay cut earlier in March.
Though Herring is a better fit in a 4-3 defense, his biggest role likely will be on special teams. He was second on the team with 13 special teams tackles in 2012.
Herring tweeted Thursday his eagerness to return to New Orleans, writing, "Glad to still be playing for the best fans in the country!! #whodatnation"
The Saints so far this offseason have signed cornerback Kennan Lewis and tight end Benjamin Watson while re-signing receiver Courtney Roby and linebacker Ramon Humber.
Left tackle Jermon Bushrod (Chicago), linebacker Jonathan Casillas (Tampa Bay) and quarterback Chase Daniel (Kansas City) all have left New Orleans in free agency.
