METAIRIE, La. — Running back Darren Sproles’ return hit a speed bump Friday after his hand experienced a little bit of swelling after practicing this week, acting head coach Joe Vitt said.
Sproles, who broke his left hand in the Saints’ Oct. 28 game at Denver, has missed New Orleans’ wins over Philadelphia and Atlanta. He is fourth on the team with 117 yards rushing and his four receiving touchdowns is third on the team.
“We’ll monitor that (swelling) and see where that takes us,” Vitt said.
Meanwhile, receiver Courtney Roby, who also missed the past two games, was full the past two days after sitting out with an injured left shoulder. He’s listed as probable for Sunday’s game.
Sproles doesn’t recall how the injury occurred, saying that it felt fine during the game against the Broncos.
“I woke up Monday morning and my hand was (swollen) and I went in for X-rays and they said it was broke,” he said.
He has been catching punts and kicks this week, but he wouldn’t admit to whether he would wear a brace or cast during the game, saying, “I don’t know. You know I can’t talk about that.”
As for making an adjustment, Sproles said that’s what this week was all about.
“You’ve just kind of got to simulate it in practice,” Sproles said. “They want the defensive players to try to strip the ball out when I had the ball just to see if my strength was there.”
On the other hand, the trio who missed every practice this week – right tackle Zach Strief (left groin), cornerback Corey White (left knee) and defensive end Junior Galette (left ankle) – all are out versus the Raiders.
