METAIRIE, La. ― The Saints don’t play the Detroit Lions for another week.

But New Orleans left guard Carl Nicks watched the Lions’ Thanksgiving Day game against Green Bay, and specifically Detroit defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, with a keen eye.

Nicks, after all, played with Suh at Nebraska.

And when Suh appeared to purposefully step on a Packers player, Nicks’ jaw dropped.

“I was a little shocked,” Nicks said Friday. “Stuff happens in the heat of the moment. I can’t speak on it because I wasn’t there or in his head. I heard his explanation. I’m sure that’s how he felt. But it is what it is.”

Still, with talks that Suh could be suspended for the Dec. 4 primetime game between the two teams, Nicks hopes the opposite happens.

“To tell you the truth, I hope he is playing,” Nicks said. “I don’t want to say he shouldn’t be suspended or what he did was right, but I feel like if you want to be the best, you have to play the best.

“Obviously he’s one of top defensive tackles and I feel our interior and offensive tackles are good. We want to see how good we really are. And it’s Sunday night football. Everybody is watching.

“I really want him to play to be honest.”
